2013 was a great year for female country artists and their music videos. Here are the videos that made my Top 10 list of the year...
When all is said and done, the No. 1 female country video of 2013 goes to Canadian country singer Michelle Wright's "Strong." She co-wrote such an inspirational song, which featured an even more impressive music video that will move country listeners to tears. Michelle Wright is on a roll. She recently topped my list for "Best Female Country Albums" released in 2013, and now she reigns supreme in the music video category. Her music video for "Strong" deserves a standing ovation.

CMT Canada adds Michelle's 'Strong' video
(Nashville, June 25, 2013) Effective today, CMT Canada has added Michelle's video of her current single at Canadian country radio, Strong, to its play list. The song, which Michelle co-wrote with Deric Ruttan and Melissa Peirce, is an ode to female empowerment and its video features photographs of real-life women who were able to overcome obstacles and challenges in their lives.
The clip, which was filmed at several locations in Burlington, Ontario, was directed by Crossroads Television's Keran Rees and his Director of Photography, Chris Stacey. Adam Little from Filmworkers Nashville edited the video. Michelle's long time friend, legendary director Steven Goldmann, provided invaluable creative input.
Michelle's new album release date officially announced!
(Nashville, June 7, 2013) Great news! Michelle's long-anticipated new album, Strong, now has an official release date: JULY 9, 2013! The album, featuring her latest single, Strong, is Michelle's first release of original material in seven years.
Capturing Wright's distinctive style and expressive voice, Strong showcases her remarkable growth as a singer and songwriter - inspired by the perseverance and strength that she has witnessed in friends, family and strangers over the years. Recorded in Ontario and Nashville, the album was produced by Jason Barry (Dean Brody, Terri Clark, Jason Blaine), Eric Silver (Neal McCoy, Ricochet) and Danick Dupelle (Emerson Drive). Her passion for songwriting has grown with her newest project, for which she co-wrote 10 of its 11 songs.
"I created this record with a group of friends that I admire as writers, singers and producers. We had a lot of fun," says Michelle. "The songs are a collection of my observations about life and the people around me and how we're all just stumbling through it. At time there is laughter and joy; at other times, pain and disappointment. Overall, I hope this record is inspiring and relatable to my fans."

"Songs From the Halls" Tour Highlight: Michelle Wright awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal!
Michelle proudly acknowledges receipt of her Medal.
(Nashville, January 18, 2013) Brian Ferriman, President of Savannah Music and personal manager of Savannah recording artist Michelle Wright, is pleased to report that Michelle recently was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her contributions to Canadian culture and civic life. The presentation was made on Friday, November 16, by the Honourable Member for Chatham-Kent - Essex, Dave Van Kesteren, during Michelle's concert in Chatham, Ontario, one of the final shows on her recent 28-date Songs From the Halls Canadian tour.
Ten days later, on Monday, November 26, Mr. Van Kesteren spoke in the House of Commons regarding Michelle's accomplishments and her receiving the medal. Below is the official transcript of his remarks:
"Mr. Speaker, on Friday, November 16, Michelle Wright performed in my riding at the Capitol Theatre in front of a full house.
"Everyone is proud of our hometown girl from Merlin who grew up listening to the Motown hits coming out of Detroit and the country music songs played by her parents.
"Michelle has amassed a total of 25 top ten hits in Canada and a top ten hit in the United States, Take It Like A Man. She was the top female artist in 1993 and, in September 2011, Michelle was inducted in the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
"Michelle is active with World Vision and is always quick to donate her time and energy, helping to raise money for our local hospital and the Victorian Order of Nurses.
"That is why it was such an honour to present to her, in front of all her fans, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. Everyone in the house agreed that Merlin's hometown girl is a worthy recipient."
The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada.
On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, acknowledged Michelle’s award: "In granting you this honour, I thank you for your dedicated service to your peers, to your community and to Canada. The contributions you have made to our nation are most commendable and deserve our praise and admiration.
"I wish to convey to you the heartfelt congratulations of your fellow Canadians, to which I add my own."

Once they return, Michelle will be busy starting to promote her brand new Canadian single, "Another Good Day," which will be released to Canadian country radio on Tuesday, April 24. Remembering Captain Nichola Goddard
(Toronto, Friday, November 11) As you may recall, on May 17, 2006, the night when Canadian Armed Forces Captain Nichola Goddard became the first Canadian female combat soldier to be killed in combat since World War II, Michelle was at the same CAF base camp in Kandahar, Afghanistan, entertaining the troops. Two days later, she attended Captain Goddard's ramp ceremony.
Two years ago, around Remembrance Day, Michelle travelled to Charlottetown, PE, to perform at a concert there to benefit Light Up Papua New Guinea, a project in honour of Captain Goddard. In addition to her musical performances at that concert, Michelle surprised the audience by reciting a poem composed in Captain Goddard’s honour (the first poem Michelle has ever written). Talking about the poem, Michelle relates, “As a result of this invitation to perform in honour of Captain Goddard, I started to reflect upon my experience of being in a war zone when a soldier serving her country lost her life ... and the words just poured out.” Michelle presented the original manuscript of the poem to Nichola’s parents, Tim and Sally Goddard.

Michelle participates in collaboration to support Canadian troops
(Nashville, October 20, 2010) This past September at Canadian Country Music Week, a large group of Canadian country artists, including Michelle, convened to record a benefit single and video to honour our fallen Canadian troops and their families. All proceeds will go to the "Military Families Fund" and "Boomer's Legacy."
The “Military Families Fund” is an organization that provides immediate assistance, such as specialized health care and rehabilitation, to military families in need. “Boomer’s Legacy,” a private charity, specializes in helping deployed soldiers and others in need with essentials like medications for a clinic or buying school supplies for students. The foundation was created in honour of Corporal Andrew "Boomer" Eykelenboom, a soldier killed in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber in 2006.
The song, titled Standing Strong and True (For Tomorrow), was composed by Ron Irving, Lynda McKillip and Tom McKillip. Artists who performed include Terri Clark, Emerson Drive, Victoria Banks, Aaron Pritchett, Crystal Shawanda, The Higgins, Michelle and many more.
The single will be available to purchase online next Tuesday, October 26, and the video will be available to purchase November 2. To see the streaming video now, visit www.cmt.ca (the video player is on the right side). The video can also be seen on CMT Canada.
Savannah Music reissues Michelle's 1988 debut album ‘Do Right By Me’
(Nashville, August 18, 2010) Brian Ferriman, President of Savannah Music USA and Michelle's long time manager, is pleased to announce that the first release from his recently relaunched Savannah Music label in Canada will be the remastered and repackaged reissue of Michelle's 1988 debut album, Do Right By Me, on Tuesday, August 24.
With over 42,000 albums sold in Canada alone, the original Do Right By Me was a major hit in Canada for its time. It gave Michelle the first hits she ever had - no less than seven in Canada - and it led to her first U.S. record contract, still more hits, and a career that continues to bring her in front of audiences around the world. All seven of the hits from Do Right By Me still receive significant gold airplay on Canadian country radio, especially the album’s three Top 10 singles: the title track, the AC crossover song I Wish I Were Only Lonely, and Michelle’s distinctive cover of Andy Kim’s Rock Me Gently.
The new Do Right By Me will be most welcome: Brian Foraker’s skillful remastering has brought the album sonically into the 21st century. The new version also includes a bonus track never before available on CD — Michelle's duet with the late Terry Carisse from 1987, the title cut of his album None of the Feeling is Gone.
The roots of Michelle's success are out in the open again with the re-release of Do Right By Me. The strength of those roots — and the singer’s own strength — is self-evident in every song. Not everything that’s old becomes new again, but this classic country record sounds as fresh, lively, and exciting as it did when it was originally made. In fact, remastered and repackaged, Do Right By Me sounds and looks even more crisp and fresh than it did the first time around.
In stores in Canada, August 24, 2010. Pre-orders are available from Michelle's website store now. At present, U.S. sales will be online only.
Michelle's Facebook online
(Nashville, July 15, 2010) Michelle’s Online “Run” for charity today reached - and raced past - its first goal of 5000 “likes” for her Facebook page. Celebrating the achievement with her wonderful fans, Michelle enthused, “It took a little longer than we first hoped, but it feels great to have completed the first leg of our 5K/10K run.” Originally conceived as ending on her birthday, the event was a little slow out of the starting gate. However, after celebrating her birthday in early July, Michelle, undaunted, decided to extend her 5K/10K Online “Run” indefinitely and will continue to donate 10 cents to the TN Red Cross, and now 10 cents as well to World Vision Canada, for every new Facebook “like” she receives, all the way through to the 10,000 “likes” finish line.
Here’s how you can help:
- If you haven't already "liked" Michelle's Facebook page, click the "like" button at the top.

Help Michelle support Flood Relief, WorldVision with 5K & 10K Online Brithday "Run"
With her birthday only two weeks away, Michelle has decided that this year she would like to give a great birthday present rather than receive one. Concerned about the struggles that so many people are facing these days, in Nashville and around the globe, Michelle has decided to host “Michelle’s 5K/10K Online Birthday Run” in support of the victims of the recent Tennessee flood, as well as WorldVision Canada.
Here's how the digital "run" works: For every new fan to "like" Michelle's Facebook page from today through July 1, Michelle will donate 10 cents to the American Red Cross’ Nashville area chapter until her Fan page has a total of 5,000 "likes." After that, Michelle will donate 10 cents to the TN Red Cross AND 10 cents to WorldVision Canada through July 1 for every additional "like" until her page has 10,000 "likes."
Here’s how you can help:
- If you haven't already "liked" Michelle's Facebook page, go ahead and click the "like" button at the top.
- At Michelle's Facebook page, click the "Suggest to Friends" button on the left side and let your pals know that when they "like" Michelle's page, they'll also be supporting the flood victims and aiding in the fight to end global poverty.
Let's take a "run" at it for Michelle's birthday!
Thanks from the Wright Staff!

MICHELLE'S POEM IN HONOUR OF NICHOLA GODDARD NOW ONLINE!
(November 10, 2009) As you may know, Michelle travelled to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island this past weekend to perform at a November 7th concert there to benefit Light Up Papua New Guinea, a project in honour of Captain Nichola Goddard, the first Canadian female soldier killed in combat since World War II.
Michelle was deeply honoured to appear at this concert: on September 17, 2006, the day that Captain Goddard was killed, Michelle was at the base camp in Kandahar, Afghanistan entertaining the troops, and she attended Captain Goddard's ramp ceremony two days later.
In addition to her musical performances on Saturday night, Michelle surprised the audience by reading a poem written in Captain Goddard's honour (the first poem Michelle has ever written). Talking about the poem on Saturday night, Michelle related, "As a result of this invitation I started to reflect upon my experience of being in a war zone when a soldier serving her country lost her life... and the words just poured out." Michelle presented the manuscript of the poem to Nichola's parents, Tom and Sally Goddard.
If you're interested in reading Captain Nichola Goddard, click here. If you know any one else who might appreciate its heartfelt sentiments on November 11, you’re welcome to share it.
MICHELLE TO 'LIGHT UP' CHARLOTTETOWN NOVEMBER 7!
(November 3, 2009) Michelle, Lennie Gallant, Richard Wood and others will donate their performances at a November 7th concert at the UPEI Field House in Charlottetown, PE to benefit Light Up Papua New Guinea, a project in honour of Captain Nichola Goddard, who was killed in Afghanistan while serving with the Canadian Forces there. Speaking from Nashville, Michelle said, “I am deeply honoured to be performing at this concert.” Michelle was at the base in Kandahar, Afghanistan entertaining the troops on September 17, 2006, the day that Nichola was killed, and she attended Captain Goddard's ramp ceremony two days later. Her moving account of her May 2006 trip to Afghanistan can be read here. Michelle plans a very special surprise for Saturday's concert.
Nichola's parents, Tim and Sally Goddard of Charlottetown, will attend the performance.
A dinner preceding the concert will include a keynote address by CTV News journalist Lisa Laflamme who was imbedded with Nichola's battalion in the weeks preceding her death.
Nichola was born in Papua New Guinea when her parents were CUSO teachers there. The Light Up Papua New Guinea project brings solar lights to rural first aid posts and birthing centres in Papua New Guinea. The concert will begin at 8pm at the Field House at UPEI. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.themontgomerytheatre.com. The dinner begins at 5pm with a reception at MacMillan Hall, UPEI. MICHELLE TO DEBUT ACOUSTIC TOUR IN APRIL!
For the past few years, many of Michelle's fans have been asking her to do a full acoustic tour: her songs and her voice accompanied mostly by acoustic instruments. We are happy to announce that Michelle has decided to perform some acoustic concerts this year, starting with a run of shows in the Prairie Provinces in April.
The Wright Songs - An acoustic evening with Michelle Wright will feature a comfortable setting on stage each night. Michelle will be joined by her wonderful guitar player, Shaun Bayles, on acoustic guitar, dobro and mandolin (plus he might sneak in a bit of electric guitar here and there), and her brilliant new keyboard player, Clint Parris. Of course the trio will be playing the hits - perhaps with a fresh new arrangement or two thrown in for good measure - but they also plan to go back and play some of the favorites Michelle has not done in a while, and they are going to do some exploring, too, presenting some songs, both old and new, that Michelle has never performed in concert before.
The Wright Songs - An acoustic evening with Michelle Wright - Tour 2009 kicks off in Portage La Prairie on Thursday, April 16 at the William Glesby Centre and continues on through The Pas, Melfort, Nipawin, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Langley. More dates will be added at different times during the year.
KRYSTAAL JOINS MICHELLE ONSTAGE IN MISSISSAUGA AND CHATHAM!
On Friday, December 12, 2008 at The Living Arts Center in Mississauga, and on Thursday, December 18 at the Kiwanis Theatre in Chatham, the group called Krystaal joined Michelle as her special guest.
Krystaal is a trio of brothers who survived the massacre in the Republic of Congo (now known as Zaire). They’ve come from African influence, to refugee camp, to world acclaimed musicians and their story is quite inspiring. They've written about it in a book called Keep On Standing - The Story of Krystaal.
Michelle enjoyed her special concerts with Krystaal. "One of the things that is very important to me is my work with World Vision Canada. I have met some pretty remarkable people through my association with the organization, including the young men in Krystaal. We've been on several World Vision sponsor nights together, and they have accompanied me on my song I Will Be There several times. Their a capella family harmonies are amazing. What a pleasure it has been for me to share the stage with them once again."
MICHELLE VISITS CANADA AM ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 12!

ANOTHER GLOWING REVIEW OF A WRIGHT CHRISTMAS
The following review of Michelle's A Wright Christmas appears in the December, 2008 issue of the popular British country magazine, Country Music & Dance in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here's what the magazine's Gerry Ford had to say:
"This is a 12 song collection that includes some traditional carols, some of Michelle's own favourite holiday standards, one new Christmas song, and new different and effective arrangements to all the songs, all performed with a warm, rich and expressive voice that has earned Michelle recognition as one of Canada's greatest. From the opening piano notes from Gordon Mote then the outstanding vocal, then the bluesy arrangement, you feel the mood is set to relax with a glass of wine and indeed “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” with that song alone. The new Patricia Conroy song “I Know Santa’s Been Here” with its swing arrangement, gentle fiddle (Larry Franklin) and steel guitar (Dan Dugmore), will become a standard in the years to come. Loved the rocking version of “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” which is followed by the laid back “Christmas Song” and “Silent Night”. The album closes with vocal and piano only on “White Christmas” and while you listen, you are waiting for the rest of the musicians to become involved, but then the vocal delivers you to the piano solo and back to the vocal and you realise the arrangement is just “Wright for Michelle”. This CD is now available here in the UK as Proper Music Distribution released this Christmas on November 10. If you only buy one Christmas CD this year then it must be this."

EVERYTHING AND MORE CD NOW AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE!
Michelle's current CD, Everything And More, is now available around the world on the Savannah Music label. The 12-song collection of all new material, which previously had been released only in Canada, is immediately available to every computer-friendly soul everywhere via Wright's website store, plus all the usual digital download sites (including iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, eMusic, and WalMart.com) and Amazon.com, and, as of September 29, 2008, Everything And More also will be available in some stores in the United Kingdom with physical product to be available in the rest of the European Union soon thereafter.
The first international focus track is the title song, Everything And More, which was co-written by Michelle, Patricia Conroy, and Gerald O'Brien. In the song, the husky-voiced singer expresses what is truly important in life and how sometimes we don't realize just how good we have it. The idea was inspired by Michelle’s trips to Zambia and Honduras for World Vision Canada. As she explains, “My involvement with World Vision has had a life changing effect on me. I have traveled to Africa as well as Honduras and seen what life looks like when families are really struggling just to survive day to day. I wasn't sure how I was going to communicate this in my songwriting, but I knew that it would eventually surface and it did for me in this song. I have come to appreciate on a much deeper level how fortunate I am and how I have all that I will ever need. Everything and more.”
Filmed on the streets of Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and featuring some spectacular night performance footage shot in the city’s downtown Dundas Square, the video for Everything And More was directed by Warren Sonoda for TwoThreeFive Films.
Like her Christmas album, A Wright Christmas, Wright’s Everything And More CD was produced by the Nashville production team of Russ Zavitson and Tony Haselden. Not only have Russ and Tony been friends and music business partners for eighteen years, they also enjoy a special connection with Michelle: Tony wrote her breakthrough hit, Take It Like A Man, and Russ was the publisher responsible for pitching that song to Michelle.
If you live outside of Canada and would like to hear Michelle’s new music on country-formatted radio stations or shows featuring country music, you can help. Simply call or email your local station or program hosts and ask them to play Everything And More. And don’t forget to tell your friends about Michelle’s new music, too!
MICHELLE WELCOMES TWINS TO FAMILY!
Michelle and Marco recently gained two new additions to their household - twin brother and sister Persian Siamese kittens weighing 2 1/2 pounds each. While Michelle was out on her recent Christmas tour, Monica, her mom, rescued the twins from who knows where, and Marco agreed that they should be added to the family. Everyone decided to wait until Michelle got home from the tour before naming the kitties. Now we can tell you that their names are officially Castor and Pollux.
According to Wikipedia, Castor is from the Greek for 'he who excels' while Pollux means 'very sweet'. Michelle says the names are perfect: "Castor is the brave explorer. He was found first. Pollux is really sweet. The two of them are just so curious, cuddly and affectionate. It's been a special Christmas vacation around our house this year!"
Michelle and Marco's new kitties, Castor (the short haired one) and Pollux (the longhair).

MICHELLE RELEASES CHRISTMAS CD, SINGLE AND VIDEO IN THE UNITED STATES!
Michelle's first album of Christmas music, A Wright Christmas, is now available in the United States.
Produced by Tony Haselden (the writer of Michelle's biggest American hit, Take It Like A Man) and his production partner, Russ Zavitson, A Wright Christmas is a joyous twelve-song collection of eleven holiday standards and one original composition. A Wright Christmas includes stunning interpretations of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Joy To The World, Mel Torme's classic Christmas Song, and Irving Berlin's timeless White Christmas; fresh arrangements of Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful and Winter Wonderland; the uptempo favorites, Jingle Bell Rock and Go Tell It On The Mountain; a funky Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer; and a reggae version of Little Drummer Boy. Michelle's good friend Patricia Conroy contributed a new song to the project, the bouncy holiday swing tune I Know Santa's Been Here, which has been released as a single to every American country radio station.

NEW CANADIAN SINGLE FOR MICHELLE: I Don't Wanna Be That Strong
Icon Records has just released I Don’t Wanna Be That Strong, Michelle’s new Canadian single from her Everything And More CD.
One of her favorite songs from the album, here’s what Michelle has to say about I Don’t Wanna Be That Strong: “This song for me harkens back to my early country influences. Merle Haggard. Tammy Wynette. It’s simply a great country song. I like the narrator’s admission of her vulnerability: for those of us that have had to deal with a broken heart over the loss of a relationship that didn’t work out, it’s hard to be strong and put up a front like you’re doing fine when really you’re shattered. In this song the relationship hasn’t come to an end yet, but the woman realizes that she may have to be strong and move on - even though the thought of that is just so painful and the leaving would require great strength. But she knows she has the strength and has proven it to herself in the past. Still, maybe it’s easier to stay rather than go through the break-up and all the emotions that accompany it.
Written by my good buddy, Tony Haselden, and Tim Mensy. Tony, of course, wrote Take It Like A Man for me and co-produced Everything And More.”
I Don’t Wanna Be That Strong is a great traditional country song. Check out Michelle’s awesome phrasing at the very end of the final chorus!
And remember, if you want to hear this song on your favorite Canadian country station… don’t forget to call and request it!
